(More customer reviews)After looking at many different stands, I finally settled on the TechCraft Flex 52W as a floating mount stand and am very satisfied. Compared to similar stands, the TechCraft had a decent height to it, and is very wide. The bottom of my 50" TV sits about 3 feet off of the floor, and the stand is actually wider than the TV. Most other stands would have put my TV much lower (lower than my coffee table, in fact), or would have been less wide than my TV, which would have looked a little odd.
Set-up: The box is rather heavy at 112 lbs. While I managed to transport it myself, I'm a young guy so I'd recommend getting help. Chances are that you have a large-ish TV if you're looking at this stand, so you also don't want to take any chances with the actual mounting of the TV, lest you drop your TV. The set-up is mostly straightforward and the instructions are decent enough. However, all of the screws/bolts were packaged in one large bag with no sorting whatsoever, and the instructions offered little help as to which screws to use when. My friend and I had to count screws and use trial and error to figure out which ones to use at different points throughout the set-up. Otherwise, it's not a very difficult assembly. It took us about 2 hours to set up, though that was with the added "help" of a 12 pack, so a more diligent pair could probably do it in half the time. The stand is sturdy, and looks very nice.
Form & function: The shelves are an opaque black, along with walnut legs in the front and a walnut reinforcement in the rear that sits between the shelving and the mount itself, which is a glossy black. With a black TV on the floating mount, you have a very sharp looking set-up that makes the room feel pretty open. There's a lot to be said for the floating mount itself.....you get the "floating in mid-air" feeling, but don't have to bother with the drilling and hassle of mounting on a wall. That being said, if you're not planning on using this stand as a floating mount, it's a little hard to justify the purchase. The stand boasts 3 "options": you can use it as a floating mount (like I did), or you can set the TV up directly on the top shelf, or you can mount the TV to the wall and just use the shelving for components. Personally, I think that the last two options are not worth the price. If you choose to put the TV on the top shelf, the load limit is 70 lbs. My 50" LG is 63 lbs, which is not a margin that I'm very comfortable with. Perhaps more importantly, for such a simple shelving unit that does a poor job of hiding extra wires (more on that in a moment), you could buy a better unit for the price, or even a cheaper unit if you're set on this style of shelving. As a floating mount, it's a great stand.....but simply as a shelving unit, I'd recommend looking elsewhere.
Drawbacks: The wire management system is nice, but only goes so far. Components that I have on the shelves are an Xbox 360, a Playstation 3, a Playstation 2, a surround sound receiver, a modem and router, and 2 external hard drives. With most of these components having connections to the TV and to each other, the wire management quickly filled up, so I was ultimately forced to use the wire management only for connections to the TV, and leave everything else (connections to power sources and connections to other components) as a jumble behind the stand. The shelving is black so it's not as noticeable as some other shelves I've seen (particularly with clear glass), but it's noticeable nonetheless. If you only have 2-3 simple components, you'll likely be fine; otherwise, the wires will show. The stand is also a magnet for fingerprints and dust, but some diligent maintenance can take care of this quite easily.
Conclusion: If you're looking for a sturdy and wide stand that holds your TV at a good height on a floating mount, look no further. It's sleek, stylish, and well-built, and I'd highly recommend it. But if you're just looking for a simple shelving unit for your components, you can do better elsewhere.
