(More customer reviews)I've been looking for a replacement media center.I have a lot of electronic stuff - 360, Wii, PS3, receiver, HD-DVR, surround system, etc etc etc.I have a vertical media center that I got from Best Buy a few years back that served the need and I had wall mounted my plasma.I started to have neck pain and some eye strain which I attributed to the plasma being up on the wall higher than eye level.Rather than go through the pains of redrilling and remounting, I figured I would just get a horizontal stand and put it back on its ped.
I browsed tons of sights looking for the right stand.It had to have three core things:
- ATTRACTIVE.I'm sorry, it has to look good.A stand that looks like it was made back in 1940 obviously defeats the purpose when you're dealing with equipment bought in the 21st century.Plus, my living room has a black/glass/chrome scheme, so it had to actually match everything else.This one fits the bill near perfectly.
- FUNCTIONAL.Meaning enough shelves for all of my units.This is a big issue with a lot of stands, they'll have enough shelves to support a receiver and a cable box and that's it.There ARE gamers left in the world, some people have DVD players, HD-DVD players, Blu-ray players, DVD recorders, etc etc etc...two/three shelves don't cut it anymore.This one not only has four shelved sections, it has a center area which is PERFECT for a subwoofer of just about any size and shape.The other good thing - wheels.My old center was flat and heavy, even when empty, plus the shelves weren't attached, so it was a bear to move.This one glides and swerves.
- STURDY.This wasn't a problem for my last center, it was more than sturdy.This one is no different - the glass is thick plate glass, so it's not only sturdy, but can hold quite a bit of weight.None of my units individually are that heavy, but collectively we're about 500 lbs.It's got it all covered.
In addition are the other great features of this stand that I wasn't looking for but appreciate: Easy to put together, fairly reasonably priced, doesn't clash, etc.
Now, the negatives:
- VERY POOR INSTRUCTIONS.I'm talking, 7 pictures on a fax-quality piece of paper.Difficult to read, difficult to interpret.I figured it out, but the real issue was with the bottom and top platters.they look 100% identical, to each other, so from the paper it's not easy to tell which is which.Be aware; you may end up finish it and finding out that one of the pieces is upside down, or reversed.
- NO SOLID BACK WALL.It's great for the purpose of ventilation, but not good for the purposes of hiding wires.What good is wire management if you can't hide the wires you just got done managing?At least give an attachable option for those who wish to use it.
- NO POWER MANAGEMENT.I know this isn't the stand's job.But for all the beauty of this stand, I really wish it had a dedicated smaller back shelf for power strips and such.What would be even cooler would be an integrated power strip with a single power output; that way I could tap all of my stuff into a UPS with only one outlet used.
- HOLES MISALIGNED.Some of the holes are not properly lined up with the bolts and screws, so know that you'll have to do some squeezing and moving and whatnot to get things to line up.Don't mistake me.It's perfect for what I need and I would highly recommend it.Tools are also not really needed too much, except a Phillips screwdriver and some pliers (for the dual sided bolts).
